Scott Broome
Scott was born and raised in the Cleveland, Ohio area. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from The Ohio State University and a Juris Doctor from Case Western Reserve University.
Scott began his legal career as Attorney and then Senior Attorney for the Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service, Cleveland, Ohio 1989-1994. At the Internal Revenue Service he handled civil and criminal matters for the Internal Revenue Service, including preparing and trying cases before the United States Tax Court, rendering opinions for and providing advice to the Examination, Collection and Criminal Investigation Divisions in both pre-assessment and post-assessment contexts.
Upon leaving the government in 1994 for private practice, he has continued his focus on all aspects of civil and criminal tax controversy and white collar criminal defense as well as business law. He has practiced in both small and large law firm environments.
Scott is admitted to practice in the state courts in Ohio, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, the U.S. Tax Court and all local courts in Ohio. He has represented clients both locally, nationally and internationally and has been specially admitted in many different federal courts throughout the United States, including Alabama, Illinois, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Scott is a frequent Speaker at Cleveland Tax Institute and a frequent Speaker Continuing Education Seminars and is a past Director Federal Bar Association
Scott is a member Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and a member American Bar Association, Tax Section, Business Law Section and Criminal Law Section.
He was voted the tax controversy attorney of the year for the 2019 year by Best Lawyers in America.
Scott works closely with both large and small Certified Public Accounting Firms, and other financial advisors. We do not prepare tax returns.
Scott has been active in public service in his community. He has served a member Vestry at his church, St. Christopher’s by the River and is a current Trustee of the Gates Mills Land Conservancy, a member of the Gates Mills Planning and Zoning Board and the Gates Mills Safety Committee and is a Trustee of the Gates Mills Historical Society. He also has extensive experience coaching youth sports including baseball, basketball and track.
